Taste of DeiSHú

Locally-inspired food is another must-try during your Deishú visit! Take the time for a full meal, or stick to grab-and-go snacks to keep your adventure on pace. The relationship between the plants, mountains and river valleys you’ll experience while you’re here and the food that comes from them is a long and storied one. Subsistence and harvesting are significant parts of Alaskan culture, and we hope to offer you a glimpse into why.

This is our culture

In the Tlingit language, Deishú means "end of the trail." This is the spirit that drives Discover Deishú, under the leadership of the Chilkoot Indian Association, to offer unrivaled experiences in their ancestral home.

As you spend time on this land, you are taking in the fruits of Tlingit stewardship. This land’s beauty comes from Tlingit ways of hunting, harvesting food, gathering resources. This is not just an Alaskan adventure, it is a home, dearly loved and cared for. The trees around you provide for all of us. Watch the salmon runs from the riverbank and consider how long they have fed Tlingit people. These relationships are deep-rooted.

Tlingit stories map the land and reflect it. Traditional dances and songs, some with history reaching back to time immemorial, help form a rich culture woven into these waters, forests and mountains. This is Haa Aaní.
